Gaoming County was first established in the 11th year of the Emperor Chenghua in Ming Dynasty (i.e. 1475) and Mingcheng was its metropolis. in November 1958, Gaoming County was merged with Heshan County renamed as Gaohe County with its government located in Shaping of Heshan. in December 1981, Gaoming’s former organizational system of county was resumed and the metropolis was set in the east of the county by Xijiang River. In April 1994, approved by the State Council, Gaoming was upgraded from county to city. In December 2002, Gaoming City became one of Foshan City’s five districts, named as Gaoming District. The culture of Gaoming has a magnificent and brilliant history, and was ever honored as “Culture ethos keep ahead in Duan County” and “Every generation produces its man of ability”. A great number of historic eminent celebrities emerged, for instance, “Lingnan Poet” Ou Daxiang in Ming Dynasty; carver and also the first Chinese priest Liang Fa in Qing Dynasty; ivory sculptor Feng Gongxia in contemporary age; martial arts master and surgeon Xia Hangxiong; educationist and mathematician He Yanxuan and etc. In addition, Gaoming has a fine revolutionary tradition. During democratic revolutionary period, being affected and led by the patriots and revolutionary forerunners “Three Tans”(i.e. Tan Pingshan, Tan Tiandu and Tan Zhitang), Gaoming people bravely fought against imperialism and feudalism, making great contribution to the revolutionary career of China. Therefore, Gaoming became the patriotism education base of Guangdong Province.
